Which testosterone ester crystallises more often?

Testosterone cypionate is the form of testosterone that most commonly crystallises in the bottle (vial). This happens primarily when the solution is exposed to temperatures below the recommended storage range, typically below 20°C (68°F). 

Why It Crystallizes

  • Supersaturation: Testosterone cypionate injections are highly concentrated (e.g., 100 mg/mL and 200 mg/mL are common), making the product very susceptible to the active ingredient coming out of solution.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: Colder temperatures significantly decrease the solubility of testosterone cypionate in its carrier oil (often cottonseed oil), encouraging crystal formation.
  • Ester Structure: The specific chemical structure of the cypionate ester gives it a higher tendency to form crystals compared to other esters like enanthate. 

What to Do If It Crystallizes

The presence of crystals does not necessarily mean the product is ruined. Manufacturers advise that the crystals can be redissolved by following these steps: 

  1. Warm the Vial: Place the sealed vial in a container of warm water (around 38°C to 43°C or 100°F to 110°F) or roll it between your hands.
  2. Swirl Gently: Swirl the vial occasionally to help the crystals dissolve back into the solution.
  3. Ensure Full Dissolution: Keep the vial submerged until all crystals have completely disappeared and the solution is clear.
  4. Do not inject: Do not inject the solution if crystals are still present, as this may cause pain and swelling at the injection site.
